Update on In-Canada Refugee Processing

Published: Sep 13, 2019

From time to time the Refugee Protection Division of the Immigration and Refugee Board publishes statistics on the progress of claims through its system. The Refugee Protection Division provides a table showing the win and loss rates of claims from various countries.

For the period January to June 2019 the Refugee Protection Division had 26,470 claims referred to it. During the same period 23,362 claims were either accepted, rejected, abandoned, or withdrawn. This means that the backlog of refugees claims at the Board is still building up.

As of June 30, 2019 there were 74,700 refugee claims waiting to be heard!

You often only have one chance to succeed when making an immigration application. We believe at Eisenberg & Young LLP that it is still possible to successfully apply for citizenship, temporary worker and permanent resident status in Canada. We continue to strongly recommend, given the complexity of the present and ever-changing immigration system, that you do not apply without first obtaining professional help.
